A serpentine belt looks simple, but it’s doing a lot of work every time the engine is running. When it breaks, the result can feel sudden and confusing because several systems can fail at once. What The Serpentine Belt Powers The serpentine belt drives key accessories off the engine’s crank pulley. Most commonly, it turns the alternator, water pump on many vehicles, and the power steering pump on older hydraulic systems. Some engines also use it for the A/C compressor.
